    Ph.D. Program
Major Area Requirements (24 hours)

Check out Frequently Asked Questions about the PhD program.

The interdisciplinary Ph.D. candidate needs to demonstrate a sufficient exposure to business concepts and must receive formal approval from the program director. The application process that will be used to admit students ensures that this requirement is met.

The required courses include:

I. Theory. Complete four theory classes (12 credits):

ENT 691: Doctoral Seminar in Theoretical Foundations of Entrepreneurship I syllabus

ENT 692: Doctoral Seminar in Theoretical Foundations of Entrepreneurship II syllabus

ENT 693: Doctoral Seminar in Technology, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship syllabus

ENT 694: Doctoral Seminar in Theories of the Firm and Strategy syllabus

II. Research Methods. Complete four research method classes (12 credits):

BDS 548: Multivariate Statistical Analysis I

ENT 681: Multivariate Statistical Analysis II syllabus

ENT 682: Structural Equation Modeling syllabus

ENT 683: Mathematical Models for Entrepreneurship syllabus

In some cases, these required research methods courses may be delayed a semester or two as students take one or two of the 500 level classes of the elective requirements in section III below. In all cases, the timing and composition of electives will be chosen with the approval of the student’s advisor so that these courses integrate and support the agreed upon research thrust of the doctoral candidate.

Normally, the four research methods courses listed above are required of all students.  On an exceptional basis, at most two classes can be replaced by prior coursework or other related classes after recommendation by a student’s advisor and approval by the program director.

III. Elective Requirements
In addition, students must select 16 semester credit hours from existing classes that are offered by various departments at UMKC. In some cases, these electives will be taken before the required research methods courses of section II above and in other cases, students will take 500-level classes that will integrate and support their chosen research presentation or publication.

The following represents a sampling of courses available from other potential co-disciplines; it is not meant to exclude other disciplines and appropriate alternative courses. Students will have options of choosing courses in other co-disciplines.
