Q.
Why UMKC?
A:
The program is a full-time research-oriented program
which is designed to train future faculty for top research
universities. We have an internationally renowned faculty.
All our faculty regularly publish articles in top academic
journals and many of our faculty are top ranked: Michael
Song is ranked as the world’s No. 1 innovation management
scholar and ranked in the top 100 most cited scholars in
economics and business. Mark Parry is ranked as the world’s
No. 11 innovation management scholar.
Q.
Who should apply?
A: All motivated students with
excellent writing skills and strong quantitative course work
in their undergraduate/graduate degree programs such as:
mathematics, statistics, operation research, engineering,
business, economics, physics, psychology, sociology, and
other quantitative oriented programs
Q. May
I apply if I am currently a doctoral student or have had a
Ph.D. in other fields?
A. Yes.
Q: What
are job opportunities for graduates?
A:
Entrepreneurship and innovation are growing academic fields
The demand for entrepreneurship faculty far exceeds the
supply of Ph.D. graduates. According to the 2007 AACSB
survey, the averaged starting salary for an assistant
professor in entrepreneurship is $96,000 for nine months.
Our graduates are expected to get faculty positions at top
research universities.
Q: What is
the Interdisciplinary PhD program?
A:
The mission of the PhD Program in Interdisciplinary Studies
is to span traditional boundaries among disciplines.
Prospective students must be admitted to at least two
disciplines: Coordinating and Co-Discipline. Therefore, when
applying for the IPhD in Entrepreneurship and Innovation,
you will need to select one co-discipline from 26
Co-Discipline choices.
Q:
What are coordinating and co-disciplines?
A: The
coordinating discipline is the primary area of study (i.e.,
major). Students applying to our program must select
Entrepreneurship and Innovation as the Coordinating
discipline.
The
co-discipline is the secondary area of study (i.e., minor).
This discipline adds breadth to the coordinating discipline
by broadening the students’ perspective on issues, research
questions and problem solving abilities. The students
usually develop expertise in one focused area within the
discipline. Students will be required to take approximate 4
courses in the selected co-discipline.
Q:
What are suggested co-disciplines?
A. Students
must be admitted to both coordinating and co-disciplines.
Our suggested co-disciplines are:
Economics
(College of Arts and Sciences)
Mathematics
(College of Arts and Sciences)
Engineering
(School of Computing and Engineering (SCE))
Physics
(College of Arts and Sciences)
Psychology
(College of Arts and Sciences)
Social Sciences Consortium: Economics, Political Science and
Sociology
You can find out more information about other co-disciplines

Q: When will I receive confirmation of acceptance?
A: April 15 or earlier.
Q: Do I need an MBA or other master's degree in order to
apply to the PhD Program?
A:
No, a master or doctoral degree in other discipline is
preferred, but it is not necessary.
Q: If I do not have a degree in business or economics,
should I apply?
A: Yes, you do not need to have a prior degree in business
or economics. We consider students from all disciplines.
In particular, we encourage students with following
disciplines to apply:
mathematics, statistics, operation
research, engineering, business, economics, physics,
psychology, sociology, and other quantitative oriented
programs

A: A
minimum of 4 years full-time on campus.
Q: Can classes be attended on a part-time basis, in the
evening or on weekends?
A: No, this is a full-time program. If you require a part
time program, you may want to explore entrepreneurship as a
co-discipline rather than as a coordinating discipline. Click

Q:
What is the
Institutional Code for GRE/TOEFL?
A: The

Q:
Which UMKC
code do I chose for the GMAT?
A: Please
select F77-XF-16. Interdisciplinary PhD in

Q: Do I have to submit a TOEFL score if I have a degree in
the U.S.?
A:
If your native language is not English, you must submit
either a TOEFL or IELTS score less than two years old
regardless of where you went to school. For more details,
see
http://www.umkc.edu/umkc/catalog-grad/html/gradprog/intl.html.
Q. What is minimum TOEFL score?
A:
Applicants from countries in which English might be one of
the official languages, but is not necessarily the first
language of the majority of the population, must attain a
minimum composite score of either 550(Paper Base Test),
213(Compute Base Test), or 80(Internet Base Test) on the
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or a score of
6.0 on the IELTS to be considered for admission
Q: Do you accept copies of test scores?
A:
Please send a copy of all scores with your application,
however, before a student is admitted, official test scores
must be received directly from the testing services.
Q: Do you accept notarized copies of transcripts?
A:
Please send a copy of all scores with your application,
however, before a student is admitted, original transcripts
in sealed envelopes must be submitted. UMKC needs to receive
official transcripts in a sealed envelope of the sending
institution. You can enclose that sealed letter when you
send us application forms by mail OR you can ask the sending
institution to send it to us directly to the mail address
below.
Q:
How should
Letters of Reference be sent to UMKC?
The
Recommendation Form is available on-line.
to download. If sending by mail, ask your letter writer to
send it directly to us to the address below OR enclose the
sealed letter of reference (signed across the seal) when you
send your application forms to us by mail.
Q: I may have some documents sent to UMKC before I submit
the application forms. What happens to them?
A:
We prefer that your application be self-managed and all
required documentation including a copy of all of your test
scores and transcripts (except official GMAT/GRE and TOEFL
scores) be sent in the same envelope. This will ensure
faster processing. However, if documents are sent in
separately, they are placed in a pending file until your
application is received. Pending files are held only until
the next admissions cycle. Anything sent separately should
clearly indicate the name of the applicant applying.
Remember:
Any documentation submitted in support of the application
becomes the property of the University of Missouri-KC and
cannot be returned to the applicant.
Q: What if my application is missing some of the required
supporting documentation?
A:,
We must have a copy of all materials before we can review
your application. Admission will be conditional upon
receiving all official documents. There is no guarantee of
review for applications that complete late.
Q:
Where do I
find application forms and instructions?
A: Click
here
to apply.
Q:
What is a
Narrative Statement?
A: The
narrative statement is part of the application materials
where you have the opportunity to communicate to the faculty
review committees what your goals for obtaining the doctoral
degree and how the disciplines you have selected will help
you meet those goals. Also, a part of the narrative
statement is a brief summary of you previous experience both
work and educational, that has prepared you for beginning
the doctoral program.
Q:
Does the
writing sample have to be something I have recently written
or something that I wrote as a student?
A: All writing samples must be in English. The writing
sample can be a document that you have written either as a
student or in as part of your work requirements and it does
not have to be something that has been recently written.
Many applicants who have completed a master’s degree will
use their thesis. Other applicants will include different
types of manuals from their work where they were the primary
writer. If you have had a manuscript published in a
professional journal you may want to submit that for your
writing sample. The purpose for submitting a writing sample
is to document to the faculty review committees that your
writing skills are sufficient for participation in doctoral
education. As you may know, writing is a major activity in
doctoral studies and without adequate writing skills; it
will be very difficult to successfully complete the program
Q: Do International students have to submit a financial
support statement?
A:
Most of the students admitted to the PhD program receive the
assistantship, so it is not necessary for you to submit a
financial support statement at the time of the application.
